A few days later after returning from my grandmother’s funeral, I caught up with a young woman with Down Syndrome with whom I was working at that time. Although I did not know her that long or that well, she said to me.

I think it is a good reminder that a friend who processes internally will see someone who shares their own story before they are ready as turning it back on themselves, and as intrusive. Everyone grieves differently, and no one grieves perfectly.

I so appreciate hearing other people’s journey. To assume selfishness or lack of manners on that person’s part seems a terrible lesson. In reading comprehension, my children are always asked to make connections in the story – by asking how does something from this story relate to your own life?
